Conveying DID

Like the previous mental illness posts, it should be aware that you should be very mindful of peoples feelings and under no circumstance misrepresent this illness and thus insult someone with friends or family that have DID, or people that have the condition itself.

DID, is otherwise known as Dissociative Identity Disorder. It was changed from the original name of multiple personality disorder. In fact, many of us have experienced a mild form of dissociation like this. It's known as daydreaming in this mild form. However DID is a severe form of dissociation. It produces a lacking in connection between an individuals thoughts, memories, feelings, actions and even their sense of identity and self. The person is known to dissociate themselves from a situation or experience that is violent, traumatic or painful for them self.

It is identified as a condition, by the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states, that continually have power over an individuals actions and behaviour. There's often an inability for the individual to recall any personal information about themselves that is too indepth. Often explained as forgetfulness. Memory variations are also present as they fluctuate between their normal personality and that of the other 'egos'. For it to be Dissociative Identity disorder the individual must have...

  • Two or more distinct identities/personnas; each with their own patterns of perceiving and reacting to the environment.
  • Two  of these identities or personalities take control of their behaviour periodically.
  • The individual is unable to remember personal information too extensive to be explained as poor memory.
  • The disturbance in their mental processes are not due to substances such as drugs or alcohol.

Often DID is mistaken for Schizophrenia by people that have not gone into appropriate research. Schizophrenia is a severe illness characterised by hearing or seeing things not there.

Suicide is a risk of both conditions, and neither should be taken as anything less than entirely serious and with grave consequence.
Symptoms:

  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Suicidal tendencies (Roleplay with caution or not at all)
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, phobias
  • Substance abuse
  • Compulsions and rituals of behaviour
  • Eating disorders
  • Dissociation
    • This can happen in a few different ways. They can become depersonalized, becoming detached from their own body in an experience often described as an "out of body" experience.
    • They can also feel that the world is not real. Almost like watching TV permanently. The world appearing foggy or at a distance.
    • Individuals with this condition might fail to remember important information about themselves. To such an extent that it cannot be described as ordinary forgetfulness.
    • Potentially they may feel a sense of confusion when confronted with people they have always known.
  • Mood swings
