Medicine RP

Medicine RP is an interesting form of roleplay. In truth many will use very simple terminology such as stitching a wound back together or using magic to... well... magically heal someone. Of course there’s nothing wrong with this if it’s fun. But it does rather leave a lacking of any realism or drama in many cases. To try and solve that issue, if it’s an issue at all, there’s a couple things you can do.

  • Learn basic anatomy.
  • Learn basic first aid.
Despite not being enough to be a doctor in real life (or at least I hope not) some basic first aid allows you a very vague understanding of how the body works when you’re injured, and it lets you basically know what kills you ultimately. I will say that first aid is likely one of the more fun aspects to performing medical roleplay, especially in the midst of whatever caused the injury.

What does anatomy bring to the table? Well quite simply it gives you some medical terminology you can throw around and make yourself look smart with. Surprisingly too, it’s quite easy to learn. You probably don’t want to go too far into anatomy, but learning the basic organ systems, learning some key regions of the body (e.g. Thoracic, Pelvic, Cervical, Cephallic), and learning directional terms to make your surgery all that more precise, really goes a long way in day to day RP.

Where can you find some good resources? Well there’s tonnes of useful anatomy mobile apps. Just look for any that have a 3D skeleton and you can click and read to your hearts content. First Aid might be a tad trickier, but St Johns Ambulance has a good first aid app that can give you a lot of practical advice and technique.
