Character survival!

So your character has set out for an adventure, in pursuit of gold and riches. Or maybe they're a sailor that's been separated from their crew. Perhaps a brutish orc that was the runt of its litter and now has to fend for itself in the wilderness, or a Shendar outcast by their own people for turning away from the worship of the void. It needn't matter, all characters must survive, no matter their story, and to rp this there are some key factors you need to keep in mind.

  1. Oxygen
    1. A lack of oxygen causes unconsciousness, and then death.
    2. Moving past 15000 feet to 26000 feet, the fittest human even acclimatised would likely pass out, later dying of hypothermia or anoxia.
  2. Water
    1. Without water, a child left in view of a window in sunlight, or someone physically overexerting themselves in the heat without replacing the liquids lost, can die in just a few hours. This means that water is pretty much the most important damn thing your character can have access too, provided you're not in a sword fight maybe... In severe heat your adult character can lose as much as 1.5 litres of water through sweat alone. Once the body temperature reaches a certain point, they'll likely die of a heat stroke or at the very least suffer one. In very good shape, the average human should be able to survive 3-5 days if they're lucky. In reality you should never go without water for longer than a day. For an adult male, the recommended amount is 8ish cups of water per day.
    2. Mild dehydration results simply in a lack of saliva, a decrease in the frequency to visit the local outhouse, and a deep dark colour and stronger smell of urine.
    3. Moderate dehydration, means even less urine, a dryer mouth, sunken eyes and a rapid heartbeat.
    4. Severe dehydration, results in no urine, lethargy and irritability, vomiting and diarrhea.
    5. Final stage of dehydration, leads to shock, blue-gray skin, severe drops in blood pressure and cool skin.
  3. Food
    1. The duration of survival without food is fairly flexible. Technically a character could potentially survive for 8 weeks at a maximum. That's if they're fit as they can be, don't get ill ever and have access to water.
    2. Without food, your character after two days will likely feel weakness, confusion, chronic diarrhea (lovely), irritability, bad decision making, decreased sex drive and immune deficiency (they'll get ill more).
    3. Going without food significantly longer than 2 days will result in their organs shutting down 1 by 1, hallucinations, convulsions, muscle spasms and irregular heartbeats.
  4. Heat
    1. Your character will likely suffer from hypothermia after 10 minutes in a 60 degrees celcius or 140 F environment. They'll more than certainly die if their body temperature reaches 21 degrees celcius or 70 F.
      1. 37 degrees celcius is normal.
      2. 33 degrees celcius the body becomes unconscious.
      3. 29.4 degrees celcius the body can't thermoregulate.
      4. 28 degrees celcius there's complete muscle failure and death.
      5. 41.6 degrees celcius the central nervous system starts breaking down.
      6. 43.8 degrees celcius ends in death.
  5. Sleep
    1. Effects of sleep deprivation include; Accidental death, yawning, memory loss, hallucinations, microsleeping, weakened immune response, weight gain, high blood pressure, impaired brain activity, cognitive dysfunction, moodiness, depression, increase in risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease.
    2. 24 hours of no sleep leaves you with headaches.
    3. 72 hours of sleep deprivation leaves you with impaired memory and temporal/spatial distortion.
    4. 96 hours of no sleep and your cognition is impaired.
    5. 144 hours plus... hallucainations, manual dexterity, and a potential heart attack later on.
